Mixing Cleaning Products Can Become Toxic

3/22/2022 (Permalink)

Green Smoke Mixing cleaning products can become toxic. SERVPRO is always here to help and provide safe and professional cleaning service at 330-823-4088.

National Poison Prevention Week raises awareness of poison prevention nationwide during the third full week of March every year. The week is an opportunity to highlight the dangers of poisonings for people of all ages and promote community involvement in poisoning prevention. A poison exposure can occur when a person swallows, breathes, touches, or gets splashed in the eye or face with something that can cause sickness or death.

It is that time of year that you begin “Spring Cleaning,” make sure that you never mix the following chemicals together:

Ammonia and Bleach:  Combining these together can create toxic vapors which can lead to throat burns or respiratory problems.

Vinegar and Bleach:  Combining these together can release toxic chlorine and chloramine vapors that can cause chemical burns to your lungs or eyes.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Vinegar:  Combining these together can create peracetic acid or corrosive acid which in high concentrations, can harm your skin, eyes, throat, nose, and lungs.

Rubbing Alcohol and Bleach:  Combining these together makes chloroform. If exposed to this, you may become dizzy or sick. High levels can lead to damage to your eyes, nervous system, lungs, skin, liver kidneys or can even cause death.

If you think someone has been exposed to a poison from household chemicals, the best thing to do is remain calm. Not all such items are poisonous. Poisoning is a matter of dosage — too much of anything can be dangerous. The next step is contacting a Poison Control Center at 800-222-1222, which works from anywhere in the United States. Nurses, pharmacists, and physicians staff these centers 24/7. If you are unable to contact the center, call a local emergency number.

Being prepared is the best defense. Keep the cleaning products in the original containers with the original labels, follow all instructions indicated by the manufacturer and keep all cleaning products out of reach from children. For more information, go to https://poisonprevention.org/materials.htm.

Flooding Can Cause Mold in your Canton, Ohio Home

2/16/2022 (Permalink)

Mold on Walls and Floors Flooding can cause mold damage in your Canton, Ohio basement.

Canton, Ohio experienced several snowstorms this January with over a foot of accumulated snow. When the thawing begins, the water must go somewhere. One of the most important things to watch for is flooding in your basement or crawl space. The water is going to naturally run down, which can cause water damage to contents in your basement, flooring, and walls. It’s also important to check your sump pump to make sure it is working. With all the water absorbing into the ground your sump pump will be working hard.

As the temperature begins to rise and everything is moist from thawing, keep an eye out for mold around your home. Specifically check closely in your basement, crawl space, and garage. When a structure has not been properly dried out by a professional restoration company, mold can grow. Most people do not realize how fast mold can set in after a significant flood or water damage. It only takes a few days for the mold to grow when there is moisture in the air. SERVPRO of South & East Stark County crews know how to detect and treat mold.

Understanding Mold in Canton, Ohio

7/28/2021 (Permalink)

Mold Wall If you have mold growth in your Canton, Ohio home, please call SERVPRO of South & East Stark County to remediate and restore your home.

Mold can be seen by the naked eye, but it also can hide behind and underneath places in your home. When water intrudes into your Canton, Ohio property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  •  Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  •  Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  •  Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce toxins harmful to humans and pets.
  •  Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

What is the SERVPRO Mold Remediation Process?

SERVPRO technicians follow the guidelines of the EPA and IICRC when it comes to mold remediation protocols. Some of the steps that our technicians take during mold removal include-

SERVPRO Winter Storms Safety Tips to Prevent Carbon Monoxide

2/17/2021 (Permalink)

Snow Pipe Remove snow around heat vents to prevent carbon monoxide in Canton, Ohio.

Snow Accumulation Can Block Ventilation

With this recent storm the weather conditions make for double trouble for gas meters and heat vent pipes in new high efficiency furnace installations.  Significant snow that is blowing and drifting, and we have arctic temperatures that require heat to run almost constantly. Please check you gas meter and heat vent pipes regularly to be sure they are free from snow and ice. If blocked, carbon monoxide can quickly fill a house creating a life-threatening hazard. When a snowstorm hits, carbon monoxide (CO) becomes a threat if exhaust vents for appliances and engines get covered up by snow.

Follow these tips to prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning:

  • Improperly ventilated appliances and engines, particularly in a tightly sealed or enclosed space, may allow carbon monoxide to accumulate to dangerous levels. The snow was cleared from the vent pipe and the CO readings dropped. Homeowners can prevent carbon monoxide by being proactive about clearing the vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace of any snow.
  • If you need to warm-up a vehicle, remove it from the garage after starting it. Do not run it indoors for an extended period, even if garage doors are open.
  • Turn on generators in a well-ventilated location outdoors away from windows, doors, and vent openings to prevent any exhaust (CO) from entering the structure.
  • Remove all snow and ice from heat vents from your house.

These methods are vital to prevent the effects of CO exposure, which varies by the victim’s health and activity level and enters the body through breathing. Infants, pregnant women, and people with emphysema, asthma, heart disease can be more severely affected by lower concentrations of CO than healthy adults.

Carbon Monoxide poisoning can be confused with flu symptoms, food poisoning and other illnesses. Some symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Headaches

High levels of CO can be fatal, causing death within minutes. The danger increases for people sleeping or intoxicated and can cause brain damage or death before anyone realizes that they have been poisoned. It is important to install a CO detector in your home. If you already have a CO detector, check your batteries, test your alarm monthly and replace according to manufacturer’s instructions, usually every seven years. If your alarm sounds, call the fire department and move outdoors or by an open window or door. Due to the invisible nature of carbon monoxide, alarms should never be unplugged.

10 Tips for Preventing Water Damage This Spring in Your Canton Ohio Home

3/29/2019 (Permalink)

A Canton Ohio basement flooded after a rain storm.

When the seasons change and winter slowly melts away into spring water damage can become a problem. Certain precautions can be taken in order to prevent the common causes of  water damage while saving you money on clean ups. There are many different precautions a homeowner can do, but here are the top 10 prevention tips on how to fight water damage this spring.

  1. Basement pumps - Install a sump pump or sewage back flow valve and keep a battery-operated backup in case of power failure.
  2. Debris Removal - Clean gutters at least twice a year to prevent ice dams and debris blockage.
  3. Exterior of house - Inspect windows and doors for cracks around the edges. Keep all walls and side paneling painted and well sealed.
  4. Foundation cracks - Inspect your foundation on a regular basis for cracks that can be small, but can create a lot of damage.
  5. Grading & Landscaping - Make sure your grading encourages water flow away from your house. If it does not think about altering it. While also trimming trees and avoid planting shrubs near pipes and other utilities.
  6. Roof - Ensure that your roof is maintained properly. Check for sufficient insulation and that your ceiling is airtight.
  7. Disconnect hoses - Standing water in a hose can cause freezing and lead to a ice blockage in the pipes. This can cause damage to walls, floors, and foundation.
  8. Water Main - If you leave for an extended amount of time shut off your water main to decrease your chances of standing water and frozen pipes.
  9. Water Detection Devices - Invest in water detector which is a small electronic device that sounds an alarm when its sensor is in contact with moisture.
  10. Monitor your water bill - A simple way of detecting a non obvious leak is by watching for a non accounted for spike in your water bill.

You may not be able to control the weather, but you can be ready for the season change by implementing certain precautions. This implementation leads to preventing water damage and saves you from costly water damage restoration repairs. If spring thaw does reach your home and you face water damage contact SERVPRO of South & East Stark County at 330-823-4088 and we will make it “Like it never even happened.”

5 Categories of Fire Damage

3/15/2019 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Contents are removed from a home in Canton Ohio.

SERVPRO has 5 Categories of Fire Damage

Mitigation Services: The goal of mitigation is to secure the structure and prevent further damage. Mitigation could include boarding up the area that was damaged to secure the structure and establishing a temporary power hookup. If the structure is wet from the water used by firefighters than emergency dry out procedures will begin to prevent secondary water damage.

Structural Cleaning Services: Cleaning of a fire- damaged structure focuses on removing smoke residues from the structural components and deodorizing odors given off by residues. The restoration company and the insurance adjuster consult and advise the property owner on the restoration process that will be cleaned and what will not be cleaned. This step determines which items can be restored and which items need replacement.

Contents Cleaning Services: All personal belongings will be cleaned of all smoke residues. If the contents can not be cleaned on the jobsite than items will be packed out and moved to another location to be cleaned and repacked and stored. Pack-outs usually happen when the home or business is not secure or is too fire damaged to clean on site.

Specialty Restoration Services: If items such as electronics, dry-cleaning or refinishing special furniture or art work will be sent to specialized subcontractors to be restored.

Reconstruction Services: In some fire situations, structural damage has occurred and restoring cannot be done to preloss condition, so rebuilding is necessary.

SERVPRO of South & East Stark County has the capabilities to board up your home right after the fire, mitigate, clean up and restore and very damage items and even rebuild your home or business. Call us today 330-823-4088.

Understanding the Five Stages of Water Damage

3/14/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage can be detrimental to your home if not stopped before. Water damage is commonly discussed in a five stage process. Knowing the five steps is important so you can assess your damage and call professionals before your house reaches extensive damage.

Stage one - The free flow of water. Due to gravity water will want to travel until it is level. Water will travel through your walls and flooring and can lead to damage. It is important to report water damage at this step to lower costs to repair your house.

Stage two - Any materials in direct contact with water absorb moisture. The damage caused to these materials will continue as long as contact is maintained. The damage can be reflected as swelling, cracking or warping of furniture and other hardwood materials. To save these materials action needs to be taken before the water ruins them.

Stage three - High humidity damage inside the house. If moisture is not dealt with at an early stage it will continue to evaporate into the air resulting in materials such as books, photos, and other art to be damaged. High humidity can be apparent through ceiling sagging and condensation on walls. The humidity can be revered by using high power dehumidifiers.

Stage four - If high humidity isn’t taken care of then the damaged materials will support the growth of microbes and fungi along with other microscopic organism. Air quality will decrease as microbial growth increases. In order to reduce the growth of microbes professionals control relative humidity, air circulation and temperature.

Stage five - If still left unattended microbes and microorganisms will spread to other areas that were previously unaffected. Mold, mildew, and associated odors among pathogens may spread throughout buildings. At this stage professionals and air quality contractor and professionals who will make comprehensive plans to address the spreading problem.

If you do find yourself facing water damage at any stage call SERVPRO of South & East Stark County at 330-823-4088 and we will restore your property to preloss condition.

The 3 Levels of Fire Damage

3/7/2019 (Permalink)

Level 3 Fire Damage to a home in Minerva, Ohio

Different kinds of damage can occur when a home or business contents or its structure is devasted by a fire. Of course, many items are destroyed by the flames of the fire, but there can be further damage that happens as heat and smoke residues impact the other contents and structure. Even more damage occurs when firefighters extinguish the fire. Water and other extinguishing agents used to put the fire out can cause even more damage to the structure. After a fire there are several different ways your belongings and structure can be damaged and its by burning, charring, heat damage, smoke damage and even water damage.

Not all fires result in the same level of damage and therefore, not all fires requite the same type of restoration procedures. There are three levels of fire damage that determines the required restoration services that need to be pre-formed.

Level One – Minor Fire Damage: Smoke residues affects only certain rooms or areas of the home or business and the amount of smoke residues is light to moderate. Restoration may involve dry or wet cleaning of ceilings, walls, floors and contents. Few areas need to be repainted and only minor items require total replacement.

Level Two – Medium Fire Damage: The amount of smoke damage is moderate affecting more areas of the home and requiring more cleaning and painting and rebuilding and more personal contents may need to be replaced. Items may be cleaned at the jobsite. Smoke odors are more noticeable and may require deodorization after cleaning.

Level Three – Major Fire Damage: Fire and hear damage is severe and structural framing and finishes may be charred, requiring structural repairs. Smoke residues are throughout the whole structure and smoke odors are very strong and pungent. Board up of your structure is required and temporary electric hook up is needed, and smoke and charred debris needs removal. Restoration will involve extensive cleaning of the structure and packing out of items is needed to clean off-site. Deodorization is needed to remove all smoke odors.

The crews at SERVPRO of South & East Stark County are highly trained to clean up and restore your home or building after a fire damage. No job is to big for us! www.SERVPROsoutheaststarkcounty.com

Defining and Identifying Hoarding

3/5/2019 (Permalink)

A home that had a fire that was filled with lots of belongings.

Hoarding is a mental illness that causes individuals to not have the willpower to discard items. These items are perceived as unique and may be needed in the future. The perception of each item as unique leads to no items being discarded even if they are useless. An excessive accumulation of items can occur and can cause a great deal of damage both to the home and to the individuals that live in it. Depending on the severity hoarding can impact your life and even affect your daily functioning. Being able to diagnose a hoarder is important in case someone close to you happens to have a hoarding disorder.

Hoarding can be severe or mild, but no matter the case it is important to realize if either you or someone close to you is a hoarder. The easiest way of diagnosing someone is by seeing if they fit the symptoms of an individual who hoards. The symptoms include, but are not limited to…

  • Keeping items when there is no space to put them.
  • Difficulty throwing out or getting rid of items. Despite having little value.
  • Getting upset when someone suggests throwing things away.
  • Acquiring so many things that rooms in your home become unlivable.
  • Having the characteristics of indecisiveness, perfectionism, avoidance, procrastination, and problems with planning and organizing.

Hoarding often begins to surface in an individual at a young age where they have gradual build up of clutter and difficult getting rid of objects. At this point in life it is easiest to treat the disorder. If not treated symptoms become more severe and is harder to treat.

If you or someone close to you has a hoarding disorder it is important to help them in the correct way. Always focus more on the individual and less on their piles of clutter. Be there for the individual even while they are being stubborn and celebrate the little accomplishments such as if they discard anything even if it's not a lot. Allow the individual to have control in their own house and do not declutter their house for them or without their permission. You can also always encourage them to seek help from professionals; however, do not force it upon them.

Our crews at SERVPRO of South & East Stark County have helped many hoarding families at 330-823-4088.
