Winter Storm Tips

1/3/2021 (Permalink)

Snow Shovel If you follow a few storm safety tips it can prevent an insurance claim from snow, ice or extreme cold weather.

Cold-weather storms can cause billions of dollars in insured losses to your home, car, and self. Be aware of common property damages that may occur after a blizzard or arctic blast. Preparing can save you money by just doing this few simple steps before the next winter storm.

Follow these tips recommended by Property Casualty Insurance to prepare yourself and your home for winter.

  1. Prepare an emergency travel kit with blankets, shovel, and salt. Shovel snow off stairs, steps and driveways add salt to prevent slipping and falling.
  2. Insulate attics and pipes. Frozen pipes and water damage are 22% of all homeowners claims.
  3. Trim trees. Heavy snow causes tree limbs to break and fall on roofs of homes and cars.
  4. Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from heating equipment. 49% of all home heating fires occur in Dec, Jan & Feb from space heaters.
  5. Allow more space to brake and keep your windshield wiper fluid full. 22% of car crashes involving property damage are caused by bad weather such as snow, rain, and ice.

You would hate to have water damage due to freezing pipes or melting snow. It is not something anyone looks forward to, but it is best to be prepared.  Follow these recommended tips and you will be prepared for those cold winters days.
